Debt Cures!

March 4th, 2009

One of the great things about tapping into a community of users is the range of expertise which YOU can provide.  One of our most esteemed users, Lawsome, has years of experience in personal finance and the legal issues surrounding consumer credit and debt.  She submitted the first of many excellent entries on how to manage debt and personal finance:

STOP CALLING ME!!!!

Do you find yourself screaming this very phrase at the top of your lungs to debt collectors. Only to receive the same phone call the next day. No matter how good it makes you feel this will not get rid of annoying debt collectors. In this day an age, these types of calls are becoming far too  common and the average consumer needs to be equipped with tools to protect themselves.

FDCPA [PDF]…  These five short letters are the cure to the common debt collector cold.  The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act details several do’s and don’ts for the collection industry with very serious consequences for violations.

How do I make them stop?

Two words, Cease and Desist.  These two words stop debt collectors in their track.  However, there is some action required on the consumer’s part.  Calls can be halted by simply telling the debt collector that you have mailed/faxed a cease and desist letter an any further communications concerning the debt shall be via USPS.

The second step is tricky.  You have to actually mail/fax the letter.  If these simple steps are followed you will be able to freely answer your phone with or without the use of caller ID.

Until next time, remember, credit is bondage don’t become a slave!

Driving Me Crazy

February 26th, 2009

Like most Americans, I commute to work daily.  And increasingly, I get the feeling I am taking my life into my own hands.  Or more accurately, placing my life into the hands of the strangers with which I commute. Not only do I see less evidence of traditional American driving etiquette; traffic, traditionally regarded as an annoyance and productivity drain has morphed in to a seriously dangerous proposition.

Breaking traffic etiquette is quite different from breaking traffic law because it is (unfortunately) not criminal.  Therefore, the only enforceable penalties are me screaming profanity at the top of my lungs in an attempt to penetrate my windshield and yours or mean stares!

Maybe I am waxing nostalgic, but when I think back to years ago when I learned to drive, people seemed to follow the rules of the road for the most part.  Of course, you drove across your occasional jerks but it was more the exception than the rule.  These days, I routinely see people attempting to weave their way out of gridlock, driving 50 MPH in the fast lane with a caravan of ten angry drivers in tow, or merging onto the expressway and immediately changing lanes with no regard to traffic flow or conditions as if their model of car only works in their favorite lane.  I could do this all day but I am really interested in the why???

Good driving etiquette is not enforceable but it could be powerful.  Although, it is only a theory, I believe if we all got on one accord and drove following the same general rules of the road, we could all get there sooner, safer and saner (is that a word?).

What are your traffic nightmares?

What are your pet peeves on the road?

Are you one of those people in the other cars who I hate?

How can we improve the situation?

Are we going to have to wait until our cars can find their way to work like a Roomba before the situation improves?

When is public transportation going to step into the 21st century in the United States?

Slower Traffic Keep Right!!!

Some individuals may not have self-awareness or driving skill (for that matter) to identify themselves as slower traffic.  So I have attempted to list a few tips to help identify whether you should move your ass over!

  1. If you are reading this while driving, you may want to click that right turn signal.
  2. If you feel like you might need lean over to reach under the back passenger seat at some point during your journey, stay to the right.
  3. If you are now or recently have had car troubles (this includes people who clearly have had no maintenance done to their vehicles in the last year) merge right.
  4. If you have any fears other than the customary dread of mobile morons about expressway driving, only use that left blinker in extreme circumstances.
  5. This does NOT only apply to the far left lanes.  If you are in the “middle” lanes and people are passing you on both sides as if you’ve got it in reverse, put it in drive and get to the right.
  6. Share your Stay to the Right TIPS!  Comment below or send mail to blog@qaiyimjamal.com.

I am as guilty as anyone of multi-tasking behind the wheel (maybe not this badly); but a distracted driver is a dangerous driver.

Catching the Buck

February 24th, 2009

Talking to family and friend about this a little, I guess it is something of a cop out to say in one breath, I have been dragging my feet in getting the site off the ground and then, in the next breath put it out to the audience to get some idea on what to develop.  If this is going to get done, we are going to have to come up with some workable concepts and bring them to reality.  Now, that doesn’t mean we won’t be relying on a lot of help from readers and other blogs.  But it does mean we cannot afford to wait for some “magic number” of responses to figure out our next step.  Otherwise, this is just another website dedicated to extreme procrastination techniques!  (Not a bad niche)

We’ve come up with a plan!  Primarily, we will be blogging about life in general, current events, what’s new in tech and attempting to parcel out some useful technical support tips.  Additionally, come back often as we plan to launch several new and useful site additions in the near future.  The first is a throwback to my original site design…

We have all run across our fair share of trash on our journey along this vast information superhighway.  And as the old saying goes “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  Thus, here I have sought out to collect some of the web’s very best trash for your entertainment.  The very first (re-released) WebDump!

We also ask that you participate. We’ve got a lot of ideas and the only thing that will keep my ego and the site in check is the constant vigilance of a trusted membership.

  1. If you have any questions about computer support, the internet or technology in general, please post a comment or send a message to mailto:support@qaiyimjamal.com.
  2. If you want to share a funny story, pictures or web video with the world, we can publish it here in the WebDump!  Send those posts to mailto:WebDump@qaiyimjamal.com.
  3. If you would like to impart words of wisdom, an inspirational story or any other form of spiritual encouragement, we will not hesitate to share those as well.  Send to: mailto:Uplift@qaiyimjamal.com
  4. If you have any suggestions or comments aim at improving the site or the content, send mail to Webmaster@qaiyimjamal.com

Wow… this could turn into a site I actually use!

Over Starting

February 11th, 2009

Have you ever wanted to do something so badly and so well, that you researched, prepared, guessed and second-guessed yourself into a state of paralysis?  That is where I have existed with this site for quite some time now.

Countless ideas on how I could turn my small net rest stop into the next million dollar dream.  Equally as many books and articles read on the latest technologies which would allow me to deploy the next killer app and take over the world.

So, a few years into the experiment and not only has my site NOT taken over the world and made me a household name; but pitifully, even I would have to admit that the current amount of “content” I have compiled is a little lacking…

What went wrong?  The only real utility which I have really gotten out of the site are the email services and as a test bed for the myriad of development projects which I have been involved in over the years.

But that’s ok… I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it… People like me!  Seriously, I had to come to grips with the fact that it is what it is.  This probably is not the proper location or platform from which to launch my empire.  But as a developer, I know I can do a lot better than “Under construction.”

Now… Where do we start?  J
