The Return of Community?

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Do you know your neighbors? The general consensus over the last 30 years has been the American family and by extension American communities have been in a state of degradation.

However, with the rise of Web 2.0, social networks and media, we maybe seeing the rebirth of the American sense of community. For years now, sites like MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn have allow us to connect online with friends, family, colleagues and other people with whom we share a common interest or bond.

More recently, however with the arise of location based services and sites like FourSquare we not only know when are ‘friends,’ ‘fans,’ and ‘followers’ are online, we know WHERE they are online.

Despite the obvious security concerns, this is an extremely powerful convergence of technology which could revolutionize the way we view and interact within and across communities.

Imagine the possibilities, the technology would automatically recognize when your friends or colleagues were in your general vicinity. Affording you the opportunity to connect and extend our virtual social networking interactions into the real world in real-time.

If a friend was “in the neighborhood,” not only would you have the advance warning necessary to get really quiet and turn off all of the lights [never would I do this]; you could actually be social and actually invite them over. Extended to the business arena, this could be a powerful networking and logistics tool. Simple discovery of where resources and individuals are located in real time has been the holy grail of logistics and MICROmanagement since before the pyramids were planned.

Don’t get me wrong however, there are some very serious privacy and security concerns when considering the abuse of such technology. Under centralized or compromised control, such a network would be akin to Big Brother and as such would have to be completely voluntary. But with careful and targeted use this often isolating and disjointed world of internet technologies could actually start to bring us together physically in ways in which were never possible before.

Debt Cures!

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

One of the great things about tapping into a community of users is the range of expertise which YOU can provide.  One of our most esteemed users, Lawsome, has years of experience in personal finance and the legal issues surrounding consumer credit and debt.  She submitted the first of many excellent entries on how to manage debt and personal finance:

STOP CALLING ME!!!!

Do you find yourself screaming this very phrase at the top of your lungs to debt collectors. Only to receive the same phone call the next day. No matter how good it makes you feel this will not get rid of annoying debt collectors. In this day an age, these types of calls are becoming far too  common and the average consumer needs to be equipped with tools to protect themselves.

FDCPA [PDF]…  These five short letters are the cure to the common debt collector cold.  The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act details several do’s and don’ts for the collection industry with very serious consequences for violations.

How do I make them stop?

Two words, Cease and Desist.  These two words stop debt collectors in their track.  However, there is some action required on the consumer’s part.  Calls can be halted by simply telling the debt collector that you have mailed/faxed a cease and desist letter an any further communications concerning the debt shall be via USPS.

The second step is tricky.  You have to actually mail/fax the letter.  If these simple steps are followed you will be able to freely answer your phone with or without the use of caller ID.

Until next time, remember, credit is bondage don’t become a slave!

Driving Me Crazy

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Like most Americans, I commute to work daily.  And increasingly, I get the feeling I am taking my life into my own hands.  Or more accurately, placing my life into the hands of the strangers with which I commute. Not only do I see less evidence of traditional American driving etiquette; traffic, traditionally regarded as an annoyance and productivity drain has morphed in to a seriously dangerous proposition.

Breaking traffic etiquette is quite different from breaking traffic law because it is (unfortunately) not criminal.  Therefore, the only enforceable penalties are me screaming profanity at the top of my lungs in an attempt to penetrate my windshield and yours or mean stares!

Maybe I am waxing nostalgic, but when I think back to years ago when I learned to drive, people seemed to follow the rules of the road for the most part.  Of course, you drove across your occasional jerks but it was more the exception than the rule.  These days, I routinely see people attempting to weave their way out of gridlock, driving 50 MPH in the fast lane with a caravan of ten angry drivers in tow, or merging onto the expressway and immediately changing lanes with no regard to traffic flow or conditions as if their model of car only works in their favorite lane.  I could do this all day but I am really interested in the why???

Good driving etiquette is not enforceable but it could be powerful.  Although, it is only a theory, I believe if we all got on one accord and drove following the same general rules of the road, we could all get there sooner, safer and saner (is that a word?).

What are your traffic nightmares?

What are your pet peeves on the road?

Are you one of those people in the other cars who I hate?

How can we improve the situation?

Are we going to have to wait until our cars can find their way to work like a Roomba before the situation improves?

When is public transportation going to step into the 21st century in the United States?

Slower Traffic Keep Right!!!

Some individuals may not have self-awareness or driving skill (for that matter) to identify themselves as slower traffic.  So I have attempted to list a few tips to help identify whether you should move your ass over!

  1. If you are reading this while driving, you may want to click that right turn signal.
  2. If you feel like you might need lean over to reach under the back passenger seat at some point during your journey, stay to the right.
  3. If you are now or recently have had car troubles (this includes people who clearly have had no maintenance done to their vehicles in the last year) merge right.
  4. If you have any fears other than the customary dread of mobile morons about expressway driving, only use that left blinker in extreme circumstances.
  5. This does NOT only apply to the far left lanes.  If you are in the “middle” lanes and people are passing you on both sides as if you’ve got it in reverse, put it in drive and get to the right.
  6. Share your Stay to the Right TIPS!  Comment below or send mail to blog@qaiyimjamal.com.

I am as guilty as anyone of multi-tasking behind the wheel (maybe not this badly); but a distracted driver is a dangerous driver.
